Alfred Hitchcock directed several films before specializing in crime movies. Easy Virtue from 1927 is a sure-footed and controlled tale of a young woman escaping her marriage scandal to France. After marrying a young count, she returns to England only to be caught in the eye of the storm. The director focuses on faces, looks and expressions, which leads to the most innovative scene: a proposal, which is viewed entirely through the reactions of the call centre operator (without the main actors). Easy Virtue is way too unknown title in Hitchcock's vast filmography.
