The camera, which was freed on Sylvester by Lupu Pick, is totally removed from it’s chains on Varieté, directed by E.A. Dupont on 1925. This passion-drama taking place in the world of circus is not only a triumph of movie technology, but the personal acting style of Emil Jannings and the allure of Lya De Putt, one of the most famous actresses of the time. The success of the title led Dupont to Hollywood, where his career came to a stop after just one movie.
There are two different versions of the movie. In the United States the whole beginning of the movie is cut – meaning the audience missed Huller leaving his wife and running away with his mistress to Berlin. Even though this strongly affects the dynamic of the movie, it showcases how easy it was to edit films at that time: when watching the American version, one doesn’t even consider there might be 20 minutes missing.
We will show the full version of the movie.
